The challenge

Because the initial product had been designed entirely with AI, many screens looked complete but lacked the product reasoning needed to create a cohesive experience. Onboarding was longer than necessary, some screens presented information before users needed it, and the interface lacked a clear visual and interaction language to communicate what Planmoni stood for.More importantly, users needed a clearer way to:

  • Break their income into scheduled payouts

  • Avoid spending too much too early

  • Understand where their money was going

  • Track their financial activity

  • Stay consistent with their financial goals

  • Put money aside and earn interest

The challenge was to move beyond an AI-generated interface and create an experience grounded in real product decisions, user needs, and business goals.

The Approach

I started with the biggest point of friction: onboarding.

Before redesigning the broader product, I reviewed the existing journey and removed screens and steps that weren’t needed at that stage. The goal was to help users understand Planmoni’s value sooner, without overwhelming them upfront.

This created a faster path into the product and contributed to about 98% increase in signups.

From there, I redesigned key product experiences around one principle:

Give every amount of money a purpose.

This became the foundation of my approach—from planning income and understanding spending to saving and growing money.

The Approach

Key Design Decisions

Understanding the users

01 — Payouts

I clarified how users could split income into scheduled payouts, helping them plan how their money would be distributed rather than manage everything manually.

02 — Financial Insights

I improved the hierarchy and presentation of financial activity so users could see where their money was going and make better-informed decisions.

03 — Vault

I designed a new experience that lets users set money aside for a selected period and earn interest, extending Planmoni beyond everyday money management.

04 — Home Screen Widgets

I also explored dynamic iOS Home Screen widgets that adapt to different financial states.

Rather than showing every user the same information, the widget could surface the most relevant next action—whether that meant viewing an upcoming payout, checking an active Vault, maintaining a financial streak, adding funds, or creating a plan.

Recommnded an offline Approach

Planmoni grew from roughly 1,000 downloads to more than 20,000, with transaction volume exceeding ₦500M within three months.

During this period, revenue increased by 86%.

I continued working on the experience as Planmoni expanded from a scheduled-payout product into a broader money-management platform.

Outcome

The work helped evolve Planmoni from a product initially designed entirely with AI into a more intentional experience for controlling, planning, saving, and growing money.

My role wasn’t to replace AI with manual design for its own sake. It was to bring the product thinking AI couldn’t provide on its own: understanding the user journey, challenging unnecessary decisions, simplifying the experience, and creating a consistent system around the product.
